3 Tribes of The World's legendary Original Indonesian Tattoos

Long before modern tattoo art was popular as it is today, there were original Indonesian tattoos from several indigenous tribes scattered in the interior.


Tattoos, also known as Rajahs, are drawings/marks made by applying micro-pigments to the skin. Tattoos are very popular and become a separate trend among the world community. Usually the image/mark that is painted into a tattoo is something that has deep and philosophical meaning.

Long before modern tattoo art was popular as it is today, there were several tribes in Indonesia who had been practicing tattoo art for a long time. This tattoo is used as a marker of territory, degree, rank, and even one's position in society. Here are some tribes in Indonesia with unique traditional tattoo art.

1. Mentawai Tribe


The Mentawai tribe who inhabits the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra knows tattoos with the term Titi. While people who are good at tattooing are called Sipatiti or Sipaniti. The pictures in the tattoos on the bodies of the Mentawai people are a symbol of the balance of nature and the beauty of nature.

Most of the tattoo motifs of the Mentawai Tribe are stones, animals, plants, bows, heat, hooks, rattan thorns, sago holder, and livestock. It is said that the tattoo tradition of the Mentawai Tribe is much older than the tattoo tradition in Egypt. Along with the entry of religion and education, Mentawai tribal tattoos are no longer found.

2. Dayak tribe


The tattoo tradition on the island of Borneo is widely practiced by a number of indigenous tribes, such as the Iban Dayak Tribe, Tanjung Dayak Tribe, Mainland Dayak Tribe, Kenyah Dayak Tribe, and Kayan Dayak Tribe. For the Dayak people, tattoos have a close relationship with worship, and art, headhunting. Dayak tattoos are used as a marker of social status and group identity.

According to belief, Dayak tattoos can ward off evil influences and provide safety for themselves. Usually adult Dayak men will tattoo their bodies with pictures that symbolize virility, war success, and tribal identity. Dayak women tattoo their bodies for beauty purposes.

3. The Moi


The Moi tribe is one of the indigenous tribes who inhabit Sorong Regency, West Papua. The Moi have a tattoo tradition that is believed to have existed since Neolithic times. Moi tribal tattoos mostly have geometric motifs and circular lines accompanied by dots in the form of conical or tridiagonal triangles.
